While I was a graduate student teaching undergraduate theory, five of my students formed a fabulous wind quintet. A very daring and talented group - four of them now perform with professional orchestras in North America – they commissioned me to compose a new piece for them along with another classmate who was a percussionist. The official payment was the design for my first website, but their premiere and subsequent performances was much more significant. The piece employs some graphic notation and emphasizes independent lines and their subtle contribution to the whole. The result is a gradually shifting soundspace enveloped by the ever-present resonance of the vibraphone.
